Clean Retainers & Aligners with Hydrogen Peroxide

(Step by Step)

For 3% drugstore hydrogen peroxide only What you’ll need:
  • 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • Cool or lukewarm water
  • A clean cup or lidded container (glass or food-grade plastic)
  • Soft toothbrush dedicated to aligners (no toothpaste)
How often:
  • Do this 2  times per week as a deep clean.
Steps:
  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Rinse retainers or aligners under cool water to remove loose debris.
  3. Mix solution: 3% hydrogen peroxide  in your container—just enough to fully cover the trays.
  4. Soak for 15  minutes.
  5. Brush gently with the soft toothbrush (no toothpaste—it’s abrasive and can scratch).
  6. Rinse very well under cool running water for 10–20 seconds per side.
  7. Air-dry briefly (optional) or pop them back in after you’ve brushed and flossed your teeth. Daily Aligner Care (Quick Routine)
    • Every time you remove them: Rinse with  water
    • Before reinserting: Brush and floss your teeth so you don’t trap food/sugars under the trays.
    • Drink rules: Water only while aligners are in. Remove them for coffee, tea, soda, sports drinks, and tinted or hot beverages.
    • Storage: When not wearing, keep them in the case, clean and dry. Never wrap in napkins (they get thrown out!).
  Do’s and Don’ts     Do:
  • Use a separate soft toothbrush just for retainers or aligners.
  • Keep retainers & aligners away from pets (they love to chew them!).
  • Switch to the next set only on your orthodontist’s schedule.
          Don’t:
  • Don’t use toothpaste, baking soda, or abrasive cleaners.
  • Don’t use bleach, alcohol, colored mouthwash, or scented soaps (stains/warps/irritates).
